When Is Teeth Whitening Not a Viable Option?

Teeth whitening is a common procedure in the dental field today; this is sparked by the increasing need for people to look their best. While the procedure is definitely meant to give you that million-dollar smile that makes you feel like a Hollywood star, it's also true that teeth whitening is not for everyone. As such, before you decide to go for the procedure, ensure that you consult your dentist to determine whether you are a qualified candidate for the procedure. Proper assessment is the only way to rule out any permanent side effects that may occur.

Dental assessment

Whitening should only be done on a healthy set of teeth with healthy gums, which is why a thorough assessment is necessary. During the assessment, your dentist should check for things such as enamel thickness, sensitivity, receding gum, tooth decay and existing restorations including fillings, crowns and veneers. Note that teeth whitening only works on natural teeth and has no effect on caps, crowns, dentures and veneers. This means that you should choose to go for teeth whitening anyway, your natural teeth would become whiter but may not match the color of the caps and crowns.

Oral health

Oral diseases and conditions could also disqualify as a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. This is because they increase your susceptibility to the possible side effects associated with the procedure, including damaged or inflated gums, blistering and severe tooth sensitivity. Your dentist should also assess the cause of the discoloration to determine whether it's only on the surface or inside the teeth. Once the assessment is done, he or she would be able to determine whether teeth whitening would work for you as well as recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

Recommendations

Teeth whitening is generally not recommended for people under the age of 16. During this stage, a person's dental nerves are enlarged and the procedure could irritate them and result in hyper-sensitivity. Severe pain might be experienced and the future health of the person's teeth would be compromised. Pregnant women are also advised against teeth whitening since the active ingredients contained in the bleaching products may be absorbed in the mother's body and harm the unborn child. In fact, the procedure should be completely avoided until the baby is born and weaning is complete.

Trained professional

When whitening is done by untrained individuals, this could easily result in serious side effects. This is as a result of the products used during the procedure, which usually contain oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide. When this is used incorrectly and repeatedly, it could cause irreparable damage to your teeth. In fact, products that contain more than 6 percent concentration of the active ingredients used in whitening should only be handled by professionals. It is therefore critical to ensure that you the procedure is done by a registered dental practitioner should you choose to go for it.

For most people, whitening does not pose serious risk if done correctly. However, it is important to take the right steps in ensuring that the procedure does not cause more harm than good.

Teeth Whitening & Bleaching – 3 Ways to Whiten Teeth

With the advances it the cosmetic dentistry industry, teeth whitening procedures have become very popular. More than 80% of all dentists offer them. Studies have shown that people with white teeth are considered to be more attractive and successful.

There are different ways of teeth whitening or bleaching procedures but not all work the same. Prices vary and the results are different as well. First of all you should know that you can only whiten teeth which got stored by age, smoking, food or drink. Gray teeth do not react well to bleaching, so do injured teeth. You also can not bleach crowns, porcelain veneers, braces or fillings.

Before you decide for a cosmetic whitening you should have your teeth professionally cleaned. Also, if you still have metal fillings, have your dentist replace them by tooth colored composite resin or porcelain materials.

The cheapest method is to get one of the many over-the-counter bleaching sets at your local drug store but do not expect too much from them. The concentration of the whitener, hydrogen peroxide, is very low. You have to use it often to see an effect and it's also not easy to apply them perfectly.

If you want a better solution then visit your cosmetic dentist. He can offer you solutions that work very well. Both are equally effective, just that one takes longer and is cheaper and the other one gives you white teeth instantly but for a higher price. Your dentist has access to much stronger whitening products like Brutesmile or Zoom which can not be obtained over-the-counter. The hydrogen peroxide concentration lies between 10% and 30%. The stronger the brighter your teeth. You should consult with your dentist. Stronger is not necessarily better because when your teeth get too white then it may look very unnatural.

Your dentist has two options now. He could make a special tray for you which you use at home. You must wear it for about two hours a day for several days. The tray is custom made for your teeth and contains the bleaching gel. This costs about $ 300 to $ 400.

If you do not want to mess around with it but want an instant solution then your dentist performs a power bleaching in his praxis. This takes about one or two hours and costs up to $ 1000. First your gum gets protected by a gel or other kind of shield. Then he puts the bleaching gel onto your teeth and uses a special strong light, laser or ultraviolet, to increase the effect. When he is finished you are leaving the chair with teeth which are several shades lighter.

If this is still not what you are looking for, then you can go one step further. Porcelain veneers are the latest in cosmetic dentistry. They give you a movie star like smile but one veneer for just one single tooth costs as much as your whole power bleaching procedure. But you get much more from it. Veneers last up to twenty years and can also give you a complete smile makeover.

What is the Difference Between Laser Dentistry and Drill Dentistry

Decayed tooth enamel and gums are common problems among children and older people. Traditional dentistry used enamel scissors, drills, rotary tools and cleaning brushes to treat these problems but today there are two types of devices that are commonly used in dentistry to remove decay from teeth, one is the Dental Drill and the other is the Dental Laser.

According to Andrew Scott – www.andrewscottdental.co.uk – dental drill or drill dentistry is the most commonly  technology. This device uses hard metal alloy bits which are available in various shapes and sizes for different applications. Most of them are made from steel with a tungsten carbide coating. Early dentist drills were slow in speed – around 3000 rpm – but today’s drills are much more advanced and can rotate at 800,000 rpm. But these drills can give you chills and cold sweats as they make physical contact with your teeth. This technique is not very comfortable but it’s also not too costly and the dental drill is still an essential part of every dentist’s equipment.

The latest technology used in dentistry is the Laser. A Laser is a device that emits energy in the form of amplified light which is used to cut tissue and teeth. This light is transmitted at different wavelengths for different targets including enamel, gum tissue, decayed teeth, and whitening enhancement.

Laser dentistry is an FDA (Food and Drug Association) approved technology and it has also received ADA (American Dentist Association) seal of acceptance, which assures the safety of this technology. Most dentists use lasers only for tooth decay, gum problems, and lesion removal. Lasers can also be used to detect cavities. NASA Langley research center has stated that two major wavelengths for dentists can be produced using the same hardware resulting reduced cost and complexity. Waterlase laser is the first laser approved by FDA for cutting hard tissue.

The major advantage of a dental laser compared to a dentist drill is that it causes no vibration and no pain. It does not require any anesthesia. It can target a specific portion without disturbing the surrounding area. Bleaching and swelling are also reduced and the patient feels comfortable and at ease. Currently lasers are used for recon-touring or re-shaping gums. Dental lasers are quite safe and are an effective procedure for treating dentistry in children and adults.

No doubt, laser dentistry offers numerous important improvements over the dentist drill and also eliminates the common complaints of traditional dentistry. But laser dentistry has some disadvantages. For example, laser dentistry may not be used for teeth where previous filling has been done. It also cannot be used to fill cavities located between teeth, or shape or polish the filling. Laser is also not suited for large cavities that need to be prepared for a crown. Even though laser dentistry has some limitations it is by far the best dentistry for a patient’s comfort. As per a patient’s condition and requirements, your dentist can help you choose which is best for you.

Dental Hygiene

Guidelines to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Dentist

Having healthy teeth is one reason why having a good dentist is so important. You can’t find any substitute for dental care that is high quality, but you can do plenty on your own, like flossing and brushing. Cavities happen no matter how careful you are, so dental procedures, such as root canals or fillings, are inevitable. There are ways for you to find the best dentist for your needs, and this article will help you.

When you are hoping to seek out a dentist, you should visit at least a few different offices in your local area. With the larger offices, you may only get to talk to the front staff the first visit in, but you’ll still learn a lot from that. You may, however, prefer a smaller practice where you can meet the dentist personally. If you are thinking of trying out a dentist one of the best ways to do this is to schedule a cleaning and a checkup. Doing this allows you to see how comfortable you feel both with the dentist and with the office as a whole. Obviously some people are going to put off trying to find a dentist until they have a big problem (like a severely painful toothache). In this case, you might need to find a dentist who has current openings on his or her schedule. It’s much better, though, to choose your dentist before there is an emergency forcing you to seek someone out. What have just talked about is crucial for your knowledge about a cosmetic dentist in Aberdeen , but there is much more to think about. There is a tremendous amount you really should take the time to find out about.

They will serve you well, however, in more ways than you realize. Once your knowledge is more complete, then you will feel more confident about the subject. We are not finished, and there are just a couple of very strong recommendations and tips for you.

You need to be comfortable with the methods that the dentist uses. If you are not familiar with mercury fillings, you should research the subject before deciding on your dentist. No matter what your concern about your teeth, your dentist can help you with information.

If you would like advice related to health, along with your dental care, holistic dentists can give you the best care. You might want to inquire about the anesthesia used, since some patients prefer nitrous oxide to Novocaine, before the dental procedure. Being comfortable with your dentist is probably the most important thing when it comes to the care of your teeth.

If you’re searching for a dentist, you can use the internet to help you. While personal recommendations are often good, this isn’t always possible if you’re in a new area. When you search on the Internet, you’ll be able to search through lots of websites–all of which can be quite useful in getting an initial impression of a dentist. A good looking website, though, might just mean that the dentist hired someone who is a great web designer. You should also be seeking out independent testimonials and information that you can verify about his or her credentials. Another place to look for objective information about dentists is Angie’s List, which has independent customer reviews about all kinds of professionals, including doctors and dentists.

We’ve looked at some of the most important factors to keep in mind when looking for a dentist. Ideally, you want to find someone who you and possibly your whole family can go to for years to come. A dentist with a pleasing attitude can be very soothing in circumstances that are rather tense. Therefore make sure you do the necessary legwork to locate a dentist that can deliver quality care.

Health

Where can senior citizens find the most cost effective health care?

Medicare, Medicare, Medicare: that is the answer to this question. Medicare is a program where you do not pay money for health services (or you pay a small amount of money). According to eHow, “Medicare is a program that is available to any senior citizen that is 65. Disabled persons under the age of 65 can also use this program. Medicaid is another program provided by the federal government that can help senior citizens. This program is not available to all senior citizens; Medicaid is only available to those who have a significant financial need. A senior citizen can also choose to take advantage of a private health insurance policy to fill in any gaps in coverage.” So, the program definitely helps seniors, even if they do not qualify for Medicaid.

There is still Medicare, and even within the program, there are several options: “Medicare features different plans that provide various benefits. You automatically are enrolled in Part A, which provides hospital coverage. You can choose to get Part B coverage, which helps with doctor bills. Medicare pays for 80 percent of covered costs. Medicaid can provide coverage for any type of ? medical needs as long as you qualify. Medicaid makes payments directly to the medical provider for you. Private insurance companies give you the most options and allow you to pick a policy that meets your needs.”

So, what are the benefits of Medicare? “One of the benefits of Medicare is that it provides widely available health care to senior citizens. You can essentially get 80 percent of your ? hospital bills covered for free. You can also buy doctor coverage for a low monthly premium. The benefit of Medicaid is that it provides free health care for those who cannot afford any type of health insurance. The advantage of private insurance plans is that they give consumers choices. You can have more control over coverage options and how much you pay in premiums.”

According to Ana Recruitment, one of the foremost specialist care recruitment agencies in Aberdeen, self insuring is a good way to go. “The “most cost-effective way” for employers to rein in soaring health care costs is to self-insure, according to a research organization focused on using business technology and management principles to control health care costs.” Furthermore, “the Healthcare Performance Management Institute suggests that the exemptions from state insurance mandates and premium taxes granted to self-insured health plans enables self-insured companies to develop more customized plans and devote more resources to their employees.”
“Opting to self-insure could allow employers to “regain control over their health benefits,” George Pantos, executive director of the HPM Institute and a former under secretary of the U.S. Commerce Department, said in a statement.”

And maybe this is the case for those over 65, too. Seniors need to support themselves as much as possible. But, this is not the only option they have. According to commercialappeal.com, “The American health care system gets an “F” when it comes to acting on a handful of prevention methods that have the potential to save the most lives.
That failing grade came from Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a Wednesday speech to members of the National Association of County and City Health Officials gathered here for their annual conference at Cook Convention Center.”

Acid Attack – Are Your Teeth In Danger?

Your teeth may be at risk. Did you know that consuming acidic foods and drinks can lead to acid erosion of your teeth? Once softened by acid exposure, your tooth enamel becomes weakened and can be more easily worn away, even by just brushing your teeth! If you tend to grind your teeth at night, you can quickly do some serious damage.

Often the first sign of this problem is increased sensitivity to cold air or liquids. Bouts of acid exposure will open up the pores on your teeth, and any areas of dentin exposure, such as root surfaces, can become very sensitive.

Teeth softened by acid are much more vulnerable to decay. That can mean a lot of intensive dental treatment.

Serious damage from acid does not happen with a single exposure, and your teeth have some capacity to recover (re-mineralize). However, many repeated exposures can lead to severe, irreversible destruction of your teeth.

This is HUGE problem. I'm very alarmed by how much acid erosion and the resulting tooth sensitivity I'm seeing.

And most people have absolutely NO IDEA that it's happening to them.
This is a Real Threat …

In the past few years, I have seen more and more patients who are presenting with this problem. One patient in particular, she was a new patient to my practice. Her teeth were worn right down to their gum line! Ouch! I also noticed that many younger adults who consume large quantities of cola drinks and their teeth were being decimated by tooth decay (more on that issue later).

This problem of acid erosion is not just age specific. I see a LOT of it in all ages, and it seems to be getting worse every year. Sure, people are living longer and keeping their natural teeth. Yet, that still does not explain all the damage I'm seeing.
Beware the acid bombs!

A key factor in this "epidemic" of acid damage is our modern diet. Many of the foods and drinks that we consume contain highly elevated levels of acid.
Acids commonly added to our food include citric acid, acetic acid (vinegar), and phosphoric acid – all of which can significantly harm your enamel. So make sure you read the ingredients label.

Why are these difficulties being added?
In most cases, to assist in preservation. It's widespread within the food industry.
Benzoic acid and its salt forms (sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate, etc.) are among the most widely used food preservatives in the world. It's cheap and very effective. Prolonged shelf life translates into higher profits. In the food industry, it is used in wide range of items from jams, juices and salad dressings to ice cream, soft drinks and candies. It's also used in toothpaste, mouthwash, and as a rust inhibitor in anti-freeze.

Being weakly acidic, benzoic acid will not harm your enamel directly. This chemical's conservative effect is pH dependent – it works best in a low pH (acidic) environment. Other strong acids are being added to food and beverage products to establish a low enough pH for this conservative to work. Many food substances, such as soft drinks, ice cream, and candies, are being acidified (juiced up) this way. That's the big, hidden acid spike many of us are being hit with!

On a further note, benzoic acid can combine with ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
to form benzene – a known carcinogen. Vitamin C is often added to food or beverage products as an anti-oxidant. These two ingredients are still being used together in a wide range of beverages through the World (fortunately banned in North America). Another good reason to read those ingrediological labels.
Watch out for the Double Dose!

A high sugar and strong acid combo make some of these food and beverages particularly devastating for your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth can aggressively metabolize any available sugar to produce lactic acid. That means your teeth will be exposed to even more acid. That's why a lot of children have re occurring decay. They regularly got hit with a double dose of acid from all the cola drinks they drink!

Diet drinks may be marginally easier on your teeth, but some sugar substitutes (aspartame) can add an extra punch to the acid attack on our bodies.

More than Just Our Teeth …
The harm from overexposure to acid only begins with our teeth. These synthetic "acid bombs" we're consuming can alter our internal chemistry and dramatically affect our overall health.

Our bodies will attempt to compensate for this excess dietary acid, but at a price. Our alkaline reserves are gradually being depleted, and as that happens, we start suffering from the many consequences of chronic acidosis.

The following are some of the dangerous effects of chronic acidosis …
* Minerals (mainly calcium) are leeched from our organs and bones to neutralize the excess acid. As calcium is leeched from our bones, we can always suffer from osteoporosis.
* Our kidneys are overburdened by the acid buildup and experience higher incidence of kidney stones.
* Digestion sufferers because excess systemic acid can inhibit the production of stomach acid as well as the alkalizing salts from the gall bladder and pancreas. We're left with poorly digested, acidic food in our intestine that brings on cramping, bloating and risk of intestinal infections.
* Capillary blood flow slows down and the removal of acid waste on a cellular level is blocked, increasing the effects of cellular aging and raising the risk of cellular transmutation (cancer).
* Acid accumulation in the pancreas interfereses with insulin production, leading to diabetes.
* Our energy levels drop off and we suffer from chronic fatigue.
* Fat accumulates around our vital organs (to protect them) and we put on extra weight.
Chronic acidosis has been cited as the hidden but deadly disease that's the primary cause of many of the serious ailments we suffer from. Dr. Leigh Connealy states "Acidosis literally destroys the body from the inside out, paving the way for disease to take over.

Watch Out for These Acidic Foods!
Soft drinks (including lemon iced-tea)
Sports drinks – Gatorade, Powerade, etc.
Energy Drinks – Red Bull, Full Throttle, etc.
Citrus Fruits – lemons, limes, grapefruit, etc.
Fruit salad
Fruit juices – lemonade, grapefruit, orange, apple, cranberry, etc.
Chewable Vitamin C (never suck on them)
Candies (particularly sour candies)
Vinegar
Vinegar-based products such as salad dressing and ketchup
White or red wine
The Bottom Line: Loss of enamel is progressive. If left to advance, your teeth may become severely compromised.

What You Can Do:

* Be alarmed. Take this seriously and do not let your teeth become casualties in the food wars. Pay attention to ingredients and start limiting your exposure to acidic food and beverages.
* Get real. Call junk food it what is, not a "special treat" that you've earned. Avoid associating "comfort" with bad food choices. Try choosing healthy snack alternatives such as nuts and raw veggies
* Stop the pop! Find healthy alternatives, such as mineral water. If you do indulge, limit the frequency, time length, and concentration of acid exposure.
* Cut out the candy. Tame your sweet tooth before addiction consumes you. Sour candies, being dosed up with citric, malic, and / or tartaric acids, are extra nasty.
* Limit your exposure time. Eating or drinking something slowly throughout the day will do more harm than one big exposure.
* Water your juices down. Many juices have concentrated sugar and acid content, to the point that they can not even quench your thirst. Consider adding at least half water (2/3 is my preference). Stay away from lemon iced-tea.
* Good Hygiene. Maintain brushing & flossing habits. Be sure to use fluoridated toothpaste to help strengthen your teeth. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after consuming acidic foods or drinks, as this is when enamel is at its softest and most likely to be damaged. Simply rinse with water instead.
* We can help. Stay healthy and keep your teeth for life by keeping up your hygiene visits. We'll keep tabs on acid damage. If the damage is already significant, we can help restore & protect the affected teeth with options such as bonding, porcelain veneers, or crowns.

Dental Implants: The Procedure and Benefits

Dental implants, typically made of titanium, are used to restore teeth that are missing. The implants are placed in the root of the missing tooth and are fused into the actual bone. This is done with an incision in the gums, followed by the actual insertion of the implant. Once the dental implant is inserted, the gums are sewn up and time is given to allow the gums and bone to heal appropriately. The healing process can take several months, but it is essential that the bone and implant are strong enough to hold the prosthetic tooth in place.

The Consultation

Before any procedures can begin, a person must consult with their dentist. During the initial consultation, the dentist, and often times a periodontist, will examine the area that needs the implant. While examining the mouth, they will ensure that there is enough bone to support the procedure. If there is not enough bone, there is always the option of having a bone graft. Other causes for not being a candidate include some medical conditions, but this varies drastically between patients.

Dental Implant Benefits

Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants are much more permanent. While bridges are also permanent, they are readily on the surrounding teeth to stay in place. However, implants are seen as the absolute best type of prosthetic teeth. Since they are placed into the root of the missing tooth they replace, they are a much more natural replacement for the real tooth.

Aesthetically speaking, dental implants look and feel exactly like real teeth; without telling another person, there is virtually no way for a person to determine that the implant is not real. Bridges alter the surrounding teeth that they are anchored to. This can cause other teeth to start becoming damaged as a consequence. Since dental implants only replace a single tooth at a time and are placed in the tooth's root, they do not have any adverse effects on the natural teeth or gums.

Aftercare

The dental implants will act as real teeth. This means that they will need to be brushed frequently and have all of the proper dental care associated with natural teeth. Plaque can build up on the new teeth and must be thoroughly removed or it can lessen the longevity of the prosthetic tooth.

Financing and Cost

Depending on the area of replacement, dentist pricing and insurance, a single tooth replacement can cost from $ 900 – $ 3,000. If dental insurance will not cover the procedure, there are often financing options available. Some dentists will accept payments or have a list of third-party companies who will finance the procedure and require monthly payments.

For people with missing teeth, having a dental implant can mean the difference between having a confident smile or one that is hidden from the world. Not only will they allow a person to be confident in their smile, but they will once again be able to chew their food in the relocation area. This, along with general gum health improvements, provides an unmatched benefit of having dental implants done.

Healthy Teeth and Gums With the Power of Subliminal Messages

Being negligent towards oral care can result in weakened gums, yellowing teeth and frequent visits to the dentist. Good dental care habits last, if they are adopted early on in life, otherwise one may end up developing a lackadaisical attitude towards oral care which results in years of neglect. People realize their mistake only after their teeth acquire an ugly yellow color or when painful gums and week teeth take away the joy from eating. The only option left then is to become best buddies with your dentist or so people think! Actually, there is another option which most of us may not be aware of and that is listening to subliminal messages.

What are subliminal messages and how do they work?

Our subconscious is extremely powerful and is believed to influence all our mind and body functions. Subliminal messages work as they are said to have the power to influence and reprogram the subconscious. These messages may be in the form of text, video or audio. The most commonly used instruments for transmitting subliminal messages are audio cds. Soundtracks in these cds come packaged with subliminal messages. They could be embedded in music or could be played in reverse (mixed with music). People who believe in their power claim that listening to subliminal messages repeatedly can influence your subconscious mind in such a way that it:

  • Directs your body's natural resources to your teeth and gums, which means that your mind will focus on providing extra blood flow, nutrition and energy to your teeth to naturally improve their condition.
  • Makes you more conscious about your teeth ie you will no longer be lazy and skip on cleansing your teeth and you will care much more about the condition of your teeth.

Do remember not expect instant results; after listening to a subliminal message you will not wake up with pearly white teeth the very next morning! It will take time, patience, persistence and effort to acquire healthy teeth and gums, subliminal messages will only give your mind and body a push in the right direction.
